Black Friday is upon us and we all need to try and stay safe. MemorySmith Computing choose not to partake in this American import but are aware of the dangers it presents to our customers. There are a few things you can do to try and stay safe for all these deals that often seem too good to be true.
Software Updates
We know they are annoying and never seem to stop. One of the reasons we are always getting these notifications is so software can have vulnerabilities patched to help keep you safe. Just like you wash your car every week to keep it running well, doing your updates keeps your device running well and protects you.
Stick to Trusted Stores
Only shop online at stores you have used before or that you can find a proper physical location for. We have seen stores with addresses on their websites that are actually totally different properties. Every online store should ideally have the padlock by its URL, a companies house registration number shown on its website (for UK Ltd companies), use a secure payment system (Stripe, Worldpay etc.). Sometimes you can ease your concern over a business by calling their phone number and speaking to the business directly. more and more small businesses are in the online arena and it is increasingly difficult for them stand out from the scam sites.
Choose The Right Payment Method
We choose to stay away from paypal for online retail. Just from personal choice. The best advice is to always pay online using a credit card and not a debit card. A credit card comes with extra protection for you.
Fake Delivery Notifications
If you receive an email about a delivery that you have not ordered then DO NOT open the email. These emails are almost always a scam and most failed deliveries will be notified by a physical card through your letterbox.
Stop, Think, Protect
Sadly the best advice is to always be cautious when shopping online. IT is a sign of the times we live in and, with the pace of shifting technology, is now an ever changing part of our daily lives.
